1. Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty (colloquially known as a “nose job”) is a procedure in which the nose is reshaped to change the appearance of the nose, breathe more easily through the nose, or both. Although the nose is a central part of the face, the human eye is naturally drawn more to the eyes and lips. The ideal nose is one that blends in with the rest of the face and redirects attention to the face as a whole, although Dr. Mushtaq can tailor the procedure to fit your expectations. Please see below for answers to some commonly asked questions about this procedure.

  • Why choose Dr. Mushtaq?
    • The cardinal rule of plastic surgery is to get it right the first time. Revision surgery can be extremely difficult, and many surgeons are unwilling to take these patients on, which makes the process even more daunting the second time around. Dr. Mushtaq is double boarded in both Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has over 20 years of experience and has performed hundreds of these procedures in his career with excellent results in terms of both aesthetics and patient satisfaction. He performs both primary and revision rhinoplasties on all age groups, gender, and ethnicities. His diverse surgical experience allows for tailored surgeries that address each individual’s needs without compromising his or her natural beauty. • How is the surgery performed?
    • The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis at one of our local surgery centers under general anesthesia. The length of the surgery is 2 to 6 hours depending on the complexity of the procedure. The incisions of the surgery can be endonasal (all inside the nose) or external (one small incision at the base of the nose). The approach is dependent on the degree of work required on the tip and the bridge of the nose. The more that needs to be done to add or remove from the nasal support structures, the longer the procedure. In cases of revision surgery, additional tissue (skin, cartilage) may need to be harvested from other sites on the body, such as the ear and rib, in order to fully repair the nose. Occasionally, synthetic implants may be used as well if deemed appropriate. Dr. Mushtaq will make sure to discuss all options with you prior to the surgery during the pre-operative visit.
  • What can I expect post-operatively?
    • You will wake up with a splint on the top of the nose, along with tape supporting internal nasal packing that is composed primarily of gauze strips. The external splint stays on for approximately 1 week after surgery, although the internal packing may stay in for longer, depending on the degree of work done to improve the nasal airway. You can expect some soreness for up to 3-5 days after surgery, although most patients are able to manage with over the counter medications such as Tylenol. You will also receive prescriptions for anti-nausea medication and antibiotics, along with medications to minimize bruising. Most patients are able to care for themselves after surgery, although we strongly recommend having a friend or family member around to help with household chores for the first few days after surgery. We discourage any strenuous activity or exercise until your follow up appointment, which is usually 1 week after surgery. Once the splint and packing are removed, patients are allowed to return to light duty or office work, although strenuous exercise and heavy lifting is still discouraged until 3-4 weeks after surgery. You may have some bruising which could require camouflaging makeup; our aestheticians can assist with choosing the proper makeup products. The nose is swollen after the external splint is removed; however, the swelling will usually only be noticeable to yourself and your close family/friends. Most of the immediate post-operative swelling subsides by one month. However, swelling at the tip of the nose, being the lowest part of the nose, can take up to 12 months to fully subside, so as to appreciate the finer refinements to the nasal contour.
  • Is the surgery covered by insurance? How do I find out how much surgery will cost?
    • If your surgery is performed for functional purposes, it may be covered by your insurance carrier. Dr. Mushtaq’s surgery staff will obtain pre-authorization for your procedure. Generally speaking, any changes to the appearance of the nose are not covered by insurance carriers; therefore, your procedure may be partially covered or may be deemed entirely cosmetic. At the end of your facial consultation, you will receive an estimate of the surgeon’s fee, facility fee, anesthesia fee, and any miscellaneous fees (e.g. implants, special equipment).

2. Facial Rejuvenation Surgery

Facial rejuvenation surgery refers to any cosmetic procedure that changes the appearance of the face and neck in order to achieve a more youthful appearance (anti-aging). As we age, the muscles in our face and neck loosen, allowing for more fat to accumulate under the skin surface. This can result in jowls, double chins, and other undesirable skin features. The most common procedure used to combat these changes is the face-lift (rhytidectomy). This procedure repositions the skin and soft tissues of the lower face and neck so as to eliminate wrinkles and any sagging skin (see Figure 1). This procedure is also frequently combined with head and neck liposuction. Dr. Mushtaq will work with you to tailor the procedure to meet your goals and expectations. 3. Brow and Eyelid Surgery

  • As we age, the skin and muscle of our forehead and eyes can begin to sag, resulting in a tired or angry appearance.
  • Forehead lift and Eyelid surgery is the appropriate procedure for those with excess drooping of the brow or eyelid skin and fat can give a “tired” or angry appearance. Correction of this problem can be performed with both non-surgical and surgical techniques. Most people who wish to have eyelid surgery do not consider the entire eyelid and brow complex. It is important to note that correcting any droop of the upper eyelid or excess skin and fat without correcting the brow position can lead to an unsatisfactory result. Decreasing the distance between the upper eyelid and the brow can give a “squinting” appearance which is not aesthetic. Similarly, fat herniation in the lower eyelid appear as “bags under the eyes”. The problem can be corrected with a surgical procedure which has no visible incisions and can be performed in the office with local anesthetic and very little down time. A thorough analysis must be performed by your surgeon to determine the exact problem which will allow for designing the most effective treatment strategy. It is important to remember that changing the face by very small increments can result in dramatic changes in the appearance. A desirable result is one which allows the patient’s natural beauty to be enhanced while correcting any asymmetries or irregularities. Obtaining ideas from pictures of models in magazines can help you decide what is aesthetically pleasing to you; however, it is usually unrealistic to attempt to look like someone else. The job of a good surgeon is to understand your goals and to advise you, based on his assessment and experience, on the best procedure.
