As most of you are probably aware West Texas has recently had a Measles Outbreak and there are now reported cases in North Texas. We are monitoring all of the reports from the CDC and local Health Departments closely and will let you know if any of the counties in the Metroplex experience an outbreak. So far we are only seeing isolated cases. As a result, the local Health Departments are currently advising doctors to continue with the routine vaccination schedule (first dose at 12 months and second dose at 4 years). In the event of an outbreak, they will recommend that children ages 6-12 month be vaccinated with an extra dose of vaccine (they would still need vaccines at 12 months and 4 years) and children who are more than 4 weeks past their first dose of MMR but have not yet received their second dose should receive their second dose (this would count as their final dose and it would not need to be repeated).
Even though our counties are not currently classified as having an outbreak we checked with the major medical insurance companies to see if they would cover early doses of the MMR vaccine and they have communicated that they will not if there is no outbreak. While it is not currently recommended to give early doses of the MMR vaccine we recognize that some of our families may want to do so. Given that there is no medical contraindication to giving the doses prior to the recommended schedule we have ordered extra doses of the vaccine and will have it available for cash payment. We will not bill the early doses to insurance.
Please be aware of the following contraindications to getting the MMR vaccine:
