An annual physical is a yearly examination that Dr. Sookdeo performs to ensure that you are in good health. The annual wellness focuses on areas of physical, mental, and social health including diet, sleep, weight, exercise, and age appropriate preventive screening tests, vaccines etc.
Dr. Sookdeo focuses on your personal health history and risk factors and uses these to identify potential health problems that you are more likely to develop due to your age, genetics, past conditions, or lifestyle.
Keeping this yearly appointment with her ensures that your health is always being monitored, thus focusing on prevention rather than treatment.
Your annual physical begins with a discussion of your health history and any updates to your lifestyle. Dr. Sookdeo asks about your personal and family medical history, vaccination status, medications, allergies, supplements, and any recent surgeries. She also asks about any notable lifestyle behaviors like smoking, excessive alcohol use, diet, sexual health, and exercise.
A head to toe physical examination is performed and Dr. Sookdeo completes your annual physical by ordering laboratory testing and age appropriate screening tests The testing depends on her assessment of your health and your medical history, but she will check your:
Men may require
Women may need
Additionally, recommendations and administrations of vaccines, if needed, are made.
A sports physical, or a pre-participation physical examination (PPE), is conducted to determine whether a patient is healthy enough to safely participate in an organized sport or vigorous physical activity. Many people also get sports physicals if they are planning on starting a new exercise routine. Sports physicals have a different approach and test different things than your annual physical exam. A sports physical is not a replacement for an annual physical, and vice versa. For Orange County Public Schools, an EKG is also required for all sports forms.
A well-woman exam is a yearly physical exam that focuses on the health of the female anatomy. It is also an opportunity for you to discuss with Dr. Sookdeo any concerns you might have about sex, STDs, menstrual cycles or menopausal symptoms or anything else that affects the female anatomy.
From the age of 21, your well-woman exam will likely include regular pelvic exams, Pap tests, and breast exams. Mammograms as part of your visit, usually around the time you are 40 or before depending on your family history or other personal breast concerns. Pap smears are also recommended every 3 or 5 years .
A well-child visit is a check-up that you have with Dr. Sookdeo to assess your child’s health and development and to address any problems that might be arising. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you come in for well-child visits when your child is:

Patients with chronic disease are advised on visits every 3 or 6 months for close management.
A sick visit refers to any visit to the doctor that is intended to treat an illness or condition from which you are currently suffering. During a sick visit, Dr. Sookdeo accurately assesses your symptoms, effectively diagnosing your condition, and devises a treatment strategy to get you feeling better again.
We offer a medically assisted weight loss program called ‘body goals.’ As a certified obesity medicine physician, Dr. Sookdeo understands and appreciates the variety of body types, and challenges patients face with achieving their goal body weight, body shape or size. Being overweight or obese carries with it many risk factors such as cardiovascular, respiratory, and hormonal disease. The areas of your body in which one may gain weight also influence their risk for developing ill health and disease.
Dr. Sookdeo works with patients to achieve and maintain weight loss in the long term. If you are looking to improve your overall health by reaching a weight loss goal we encourage you to talk to us about your ‘Body Goals,” and to determine if our medically supervised weight loss program can help you to achieve this.
The initial visit includes a medical consultation and a body composition analysis with the InBody570, a body composition analyzer. During this visit, patients provide information regarding their eating patterns, food choices, sleep, and other medical history. Their weight and body fat, vital signs, and EKG are performed and blood work is ordered.
Patients return either weekly or monthly to review food intake, take additional measurements or adjust medication. Once weight loss goals are achieved, we follow up at intervals to ensure that weight is controlled with diet modification, adjustment of medications, and keeping track of measurements.
