Circumcision Q & A

What is circumcision?

Circumcision is a surgical procedure in which the doctor removes a sleeve of skin and other tissue that covers the head of a child’s penis at birth. The tissue may be referred to as the child’s foreskin. In most cases, Dr. Dangond performs the procedure within the first month of life.

What happens during the procedure?

During the circumcision procedure, the child will receive local anesthesia and then Dr. Dangond will quickly and safely remove the foreskin from the penis using surgical tools. The surgery causes very little bleeding, and the child won’t need any stitches to close the wound. After the procedure is complete, Dr. Dangond places a protective bandage over the wound to protect it from infection while it heals.

Is circumcision safe?

Circumcision is generally safe and poses very little risk to the child. The risks of bleeding and infection are very low.

Is circumcision necessary?

Children don’t need to be circumcised, and children who aren’t circumcised can lead normal lives. Still, many parents choose to circumcise their male children. Some of the most common reasons cited by parents who choose circumcision include:

  • Religious concerns
  • Social concerns
  • Cultural concerns
  • Hygiene

Some parents choose to circumcise a child for more than 1 of the reasons above.

Will the child feel pain?

Children feel some discomfort during and after the circumcision procedure, but the discomfort is short-lived and unlikely to cause permanent problems.

Can children be circumcised later in life?

Some parents may choose not to circumcise a child at birth, but they may want to circumcise the child later. Circumcision can be performed at any age, and some adults may even choose to undergo the procedure. If circumcision is performed when a child is older, the child is more likely to experience pain and other complications because of the procedure. Parents should weigh these risks carefully when making a decision to have their child circumcised.
