Physical Exams Q & A

A physical exam is one of the key ways your physician manages your family’s health and customizes your care plan.

As your primary care provider, Dr. Porter uses regular physical examinations to:

  • Identify your health risks
  • Notice changes in your baseline health
  • Catch signs of disease early
  • Evaluate the progression of chronic illness
  • Investigate any concerning symptoms
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of your current treatment plan

Regular physical exams create an opportunity for you to share any concerns or ask any questions you have about your health. Physical examinations can occur annually as a part of regular health maintenance or when you are ill or have concerning symptoms.

When you arrive in the office for your annual physical exam, the Capital City Primary and Immediate Care team collects important information about your current health, including:

  • Weight and height
  • Vital signs, including blood pressure
  • Changes in medications
  • Updates to your health history

During a yearly exam, Dr. Porter completes an age-appropriate head-to-toe assessment to evaluate each of your body systems. If you are ill or need chronic care management, he may provide a more focused physical assessment to evaluate your complaints or concerns.

Dr. Porter recommends that both children and adults get a physical exam annually. From birth to age three, he completes physical exams every few weeks or months during well-baby visits. After age four, well-child visits include physical assessments that are part of ongoing, comprehensive pediatric care.

You should schedule a physical examination for adults and children whenever you have concerns about your health, have signs of acute illness, or need management of your chronic disease.

When Dr. Porter completes your physical exam, he may discuss his findings and share recommendations for any changes to your current treatment or health maintenance plan. He may order follow-up interventions, such as:

  • Specialist referrals
  • Changes in medications
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Follow-up visits
  • At-home treatments
  • Dietary changes
  • Blood work or other diagnostic testing
  • Health screenings, such as blood pressure checks

Your physical exam is an essential part of protecting your health and keeping you and your family well for a lifetime.
