DEXA Body Scan

What is a DEXA Body Scan?

Body Composition Analysis provides detailed and accurate information about overall health and athletic performance. Using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), a breakdown is provided that distinguishes between lean body mass, fat mass, and bone mass, therefore providing the most accurate picture of body weight.

Why is the DEXA technology the gold standard?

The scanner uses a 3D model to produce color images of the bone and the soft tissue and compiles the information into an easy to read report. Fat tissue mass and lean muscle mass percentages for the total body as well as the arms, legs, and torso are provided.

This information is useful for many applications, including for the weightlifter who wants to monitor muscle growth and fat loss, as well as for the person who has decided to make dietary changes and wants to track their weight loss progress.

The results from the DEXA scan are highly reproducible and have been validated through repeated scientific studies. No other technique can match the accuracy and precision of a DEXA scan.

How is the scan performed?

The exam is simple, painless, and non-invasive. The patient will lie on their backs on the DEXA table for approximately 8 minutes. The scanner will move above them and take a picture of their whole body. The radiation exposure is less than 1/20th of a chest x-ray (less than a daily dose of natural radiation exposure).

You should wear loose fitting clothing with no metal zippers or buttons, and no jewelry. If you have any metal implants, breast implants, or a pacemaker, we will not be able to complete a scan on you

How much does the test cost?

Insurance does not pay for this procedure, however, we offer individual scans at a very affordable price of $75 per scan. We also offer multi-scan packages at a reduced cost and that can be scheduled at your desired intervals.
