The first portion of your visit at Washington OB-GYN & Washington Wellness involves gathering routine data on your vital signs. Expect a quick check of your height, weight, blood pressure, and, perhaps, breathing and heart rate.
You then discuss any changes since your last visit, as well as any areas of concern. This is also a great time to ask any questions you have about women’s health topics, including:
- Sexual health
- Birth control
- Fertility planning
- Abnormal bleeding
- Nutritional advice
- Pelvic pain
- Menopause
The next part of the visit is a pelvic exam. Your provider checks your vagina and cervix for signs of abnormal cellular changes. A Pap smear occurs during your pelvic exam. This simple test gathers a small number of cervical cells for microscopic evaluation and is a powerful tool for detecting cervical cancer in the earliest possible stages.
You might also consider HPV testing, an additional screening tool for cervical cancer, and testing for other sexually transmitted diseases is also available.
A breast exam follows to check for tissue abnormalities, and your provider shows you how to perform exams at home in-between visits. Routine breast exams can help identify signs of breast cancer, and early treatment is often the most effective.
