Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to see a sleep specialist?
Sleep apnea is very common and can lead to many common yet serious risks to your health. If you feel tired during the day or feel unrefreshed in the morning, are significantly overweight and/or are told you snore, then you should consider seeing a Board Certified sleep doctor for proper evaluation.
Do I need a referal or can I just make an appointment?
The short answer is no, most patients do not need a referral from your primary care physician, you can schedule an appointment directly with Dr. Garber. The exception may be some HMO plans. You can call us anytime and we'll find out for you. Most insurance plans do not require a referral from your PCP for an evaluation by our sleep specialist.
Do you accept my insurance and what are the costs?
We accept most major medical insurance and bill them directly for you, however some plans are Atrium/Novant Healthcare systems only. Please contact our office regarding your insurance coverage. Co-pays are expected at the time of service. Since we are a medical office, sleep studies performed in our office are generally much less expensive than those performed in a facility or hospital setting. We will verify your coverage prior to any service being performed and notify you of your expected costs.
What's the process of evaluation and treatment?
First, you're evaluated by our physician, Dr. Garber. If a polysomnogram, or “sleep study” is indicated, you will be scheduled to come back at night and monitored while you sleep. Depending on the results of the study and your evaluation, you may be prescribed a CPAP device to be worn at home to prevent Obstructive Sleep Apnea and help you achieve healthy restorative sleep. The process varies with each patient, but basically it could be one or two office visits and one or two night's sleep over the course of a few weeks, then follow-up to monitor your progress.
