Diabetes and Prediabetes

Diabetes mellitus is a very common endocrine and metabolic disorder. It can lead to serious health complications which can be acute or chronic. Diabetes is the 8th leading cause of death in the United States. According to CDC.gov, about 38 million people in the United States have diabetes, and 1 in 5 of them don’t know they have it. About 98 million US adults-over a third- have prediabetes, and more than 8 in 10 of them don’t know they have it. Type 2 diabetes accounts for approximately 90-95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes accounts for approximately 5-10%. In the last 20 years, the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than doubled as the American population has aged and become more overweight or obese.

At Prime Medical Car, Dr. Bishwakarma screens his patients for prediabetes and diabetes routinely based on their symptoms and risk factors. If he can manage the patient’s diabetes himself, he offers different options of treatments. If blood sugar is very high and difficult to control, he will refer patients to a specialist(endocrinologist). He examines patients and runs tests for complications of diabetes. He refers patients to corresponding specialists based on the findings.

High Blood Pressure and Cholesterol

Having high blood pressure means the pressure of the blood in your blood vessels is higher than it should be for your age and gender. This is a very common health condition affecting nearly half of adult population (119.9 million) in the United States. In 2021, hypertension was a primary or contributing cause of 691,095 deaths in the United States. This condition increases the risk for heart disease (angina, heart attack, heart failure and arrhythmias), stroke, kidney disease, retinal eye disease and peripheral vascular disease.

Between 2017 and 2020, 10% of adults age 20 or older had total cholesterol levels above 240 mg/dL and about 17% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels below 40mg/dL. Having high bad cholesterol and low good cholesterol in blood raises the risk for high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

Because high blood pressure often does not cause any warning symptoms or signs, it is often called a “silent killer.” Many people don’t even know that they have it. At Prime Medical Care, Dr Bishwakarma and his staff perform a variety of tests to diagnose and offer treatment options for their patients who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Patients who live in the Alexandria, Virginia area are encouraged to visit the facility for all of their health care needs
