What medications are safe in pregnancy?

Fortunately, there are many medications that are considered safe during pregnancy.

In general, do not take any medications that you have not been prescribed during your first trimester. If you have any questions about pre-existing prescriptions, please ask us!

This is a list of over the counter medications that are considered safe to take at any time during your pregnancy.

This list has generic names as well as some common brand names of those types of medicine.

Pain Relief

  • Tylenol or acetomenophen
  • Do not take aspirin (Anacin, Bayer) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or any other NSAIDs

Digestive Upsets

  • Antacids (Tums, Rolaids, Mylanta, Maalox, Pepcid, Prevacid)
  • Simethicone (Gas-X, Mylicon) for gas pain
  • Immodium for diarrhea

Cough/Cold

  • Guaifenesin (Robitussin)
  • Guaifenesin plus dextromethorphan (Robitussin-DM)
  • Cough drops
  • Vicks VapoRub
  • Acetaminophen

Allergy Relief

  • Chlorpheniramine antihistamine alone (chlor-trimetron)
  • Benadryl
  • Saline nasal spray
  • Neti-pot or sinus rinse
  • Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra

Constipation

  • Fiber (Metamucil, Citrucel, Benefiber) can be used regularly
  • Laxatives can be used occasionally (Colace, Dulcolax, MiraLax)
  • Tucks for hemorrhoids
  • Prunes or prune juice

Other things your might be concerned about that appear to be safe:

  • One or two (8 oz) cups of coffee per day
  • Nix for head lice
  • Sunscreen
  • Facewash
