Highlander Family Medicine was established by Dr. Macleod and his wife Sue in 2006, making this year our 10 year anniversary of providing our style of family medical care in the Shenandoah Valley. Together they have worked hard to make the practice what it is today. The current staff at Highlander Family Medicine consists of a friendly group of individuals who work hard to ensure your health and well-being is our top priority. While working together for your benefit, each team member also contributes something uniquely their own.
Dr. Macleod came to the Shenandoah Valley in 1996 from Canada. His ancestry has been traced back to the Scottish Highlands, the home of the Clan Macleod. Pride for his family heritage was the inspiration for the clinic name and the foundation of his practice. Dr. Macleod is a strong believer in the concepts of Family Medicine and maintains his board certification from the Canadian College of Family Physicians. He also maintains a Fellowship Recognition award presented to him in 2004. Dr. Macleod is happily married to Sue who works along side him and the rest of the staff at Highlander Family Medicine. He has a daughter, Heather, who is currently living in Canada.
Sue, our clinical assistant and Dr. Macleod’s wife, is a Virginia native. Her southern hospitality is apparent the moment you meet her. She is charming and attentive to whatever your needs may be. She will always take a genuine interest in how you’re doing and the things going on in your life. She is an ear to listen and an assuring voice to hear both at the beginning and end of your appointment. Sue is also a strong believer in the family, personalized, caring approach to your health care. She herself has 2 children, Devin and Courtney. Courtney is yet another friendly face seen in the office and Devin, her son, will be marrying this October. Coincidentally, he is engaged to a former PA student whom Dr. Macleod helped to teach.
Danielle is our forever bubbly and upbeat front desk administrator. She is the first person you see when you come to our office and will always greet you with a smile. She has an infectious laugh and a quick wit. She is your go-to person for any appointment requests or concerns. Danielle is a Virginia native and is happily married to her husband John. Together they have 4 children.
Courtney, Sue and Dr. Macleod’s daughter, also works as a front desk employee. Although she operates more behind the scenes at the office, she is another friendly face that you may encounter from time to time. She predominantly manages special tasks and the handling of important medical documents but on occasion may be the face seen behind the check-in window. Her calm demeanor and diligence are reassurance that your health is in good hands from the start of your first appointment throughout your time as a Highlander Family Medicine patient. Courtney is happily married to Ryan, and together they have 5 kids. On rare occasions, her youngest children, Kayden and Riley may be spotted in the office, however they can always be seen in pictures hanging on the walls throughout the practice.
Our practice is a teaching practice. We believe that personalized medicine is so important that teaching it to the next generation of providers is critical. So JMU PA students are here most days. They do bring their skills and talents to our patients as well.
“Our practice strongly believes that our patients become a part of our family here at Highlander Family Medicine and we are sure to treat them as such. We specialize in individual care that is tailored exclusively for each patient’s needs. We understand that not one person is exactly like another; just as a patient’s needs and a particular disease process may not be treated as a protocol for all. We get to know our patients as individuals. For us, family medicine is a long-term commitment with real people who have real questions and concerns and we pride ourselves in the relationships that we maintain. We are dedicated to walking with our patients throughout life’s journeys whatever they may be. Although medicine is ever evolving, our relationships with our patients are constant. We believe that this concept is a key component to obtaining and maintaining a healthy life.
Just as our patients are treated as independent and distinct beings, we ourselves are also independent. This allows us to remain loyal to and work exclusively for our patients rather than a corporation, yet we still work together with other physicians to optimize patient care. Just as a family is ever growing, we will gladly welcome you to our family with open arms and the best care that medicine has to offer.”
