Plan Your Visit

There are a few things we do at every visit, no matter why you’ve brought your child, that will help us provide them with the best pediatric care.

If your child is a new patient, please bring any medical or shot records you have or the contact information for your previous physician(s). Some families find it helpful to have a list of questions or concerns written down and we welcome that! We’ll also need to make a copy of your medical insurance card and a photo ID for our records, so please be prepared with those as well. We ask that you arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to complete any necessary paperwork. If you have other questions prior to your visit, don’t hesitate to call.

No matter how old your child, the wellness or annual checkup includes a short survey of your child’s overall well being including questions about home life and their development. Depending on their age, the visits will vary. Here are some things to expect based on age of the child:

Infant Pediatric Care – Birth Through 2 Years

  • Height, weight and head circumference
  • Ear, nose and throat/teeth evaluation
  • Heart and lung check
  • Joint and mobility evaluation
  • Conversation about their age appropriate development
  • Immunizations (when necessary)

At Compass Pediatrics, we follow the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Schedule of Well-Child Care Visits or “Periodicity Schedule

This schedule of screenings and assessments recommends the following visits, up to age three.

  • The first week visit (3 to 5 days old)
  • 1 month old
  • 2 months old
  • 4 months old
  • 6 months old
  • 9 months old
  • 12 months old
  • 15 months old
  • 18 months old
  • 2 years old (24 months)
  • 2 ½ years old (30 months)
  • 3 years old

With the exception of head circumference and joint/mobility evaluation, pediatric care well visits for your child three years and older will be very similar to birth through two visits. We do offer optional hearing and vision screens that may or may not be covered by your insurance. As your child enters their teen years, many prefer privacy during the exam and we leave that decision up to the parent.

Of course, we’re here to listen to your concerns and answer questions or provide referrals when necessary no matter how old or young the child. If you need a shot record for school or daycare, please don’t hesitate to request one from the nurse at the start of your visit so we can have it ready before you leave.

Our sick visits do include a weight check which is essential for proper dosing should a prescription be indicated. We’ll go over the symptoms and determine the best course of treatment. Depending on the diagnosis, we may ask you to schedule a follow up visit prior to leaving the office.

Compassionate & Comprehensive Care

Although we strive to keep our pediatric care running on time, sometimes the unexpected occurs and that doesn’t always happen. If you’re in our waiting area for more than 10 minutes past your scheduled appointment, please let one of our staff know and we will provide an update.

No matter why you’ve brought your child to our pediatric practice, we want you to leave feeling confident that your child’s health and wellness are on the right track. We never want you to leave with questions, but if something comes up later, use our nurse line or patient portal and we’ll respond within 24 hours.
