A mammogram is an x-ray examination of the breast. The procedure allows detection of breast cancers, benign tumors, and cysts before they can be detected by touch. It is also used to diagnose breast disease in woman and men who either have breast problems, such as a lump, pain or nipple discharge. Mammograms play a key role in the early detection of breast cancer and the decrease in breast cancer related deaths. The American College of Radiology(ACR) for Breast Imaging, recommends annual screening mammography starting at age 40.
Our Siemens Revelation 3D Tomography Mammomat is ACR accredited to perform both screening and diagnostic mammograms. A 3D mammogram, also known as digital tomosynthesis, consists of multiple breast images and combines them to create a three-dimensional view of the breast. Our board-certified radiologist can then look through the tissue one millimeter at a time seeing detail inside the breast. Studies have found 3D mammograms to identify more cancers, resulting in fewer false positives and are especially beneficial for woman with dense breast tissue. We also utilize computer-aided detection(CAD) software for all screening exams to detect any abnormalities within the breast and to bring them to the radiologist’s attention.
