What to Expect During Your Appointment

During your appointment, your provider will ensure you are comfortable and informed about the process. First, your provider will discuss your medical history, family history and any current concerns you might have. You will then be asked to change into a gown for a physical exam.  Depending on the screening needed, you may have a breast exam, abdominal exam and a pelvic exam.  If a pelvic exam is required, there are three parts:

  • Looking at the vulva
  • Looking at the vagina and cervix with a speculum
  • Checking the internal organs with a gloved hand.

A pap smear might also be performed to screen for cervical cancer.

If needed, laboratory testing will be ordered. Additionally, we will answer any questions you might have regarding your gynecological health and provide recommendations based on your test results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A typical gynecological exam includes a review of your health history, a physical exam (including breast and pelvic exams), a pap smear, and any necessary laboratory testing.

It is generally recommended to have a gynecological exam once a year. However, your provider might suggest a different schedule based on your health needs, family history, and age.

To prepare for your appointment, make a list of any health concerns you have, gather your medical history information, and avoid douching or using vaginal creams for 24 hours before your exam.

A gynecological exam is typically not painful, though some procedures such as a pap smear might cause slight discomfort. Our care team will ensure you are as comfortable as possible throughout the process. Here at the Center for Advanced Gynecology we see many patients that DO have pain with a pelvic exam and have options to minimize your discomfort. If you have specific concerns about pain with an exam, please let us know when scheduling or discuss with your provider when you are seen.

Yes, your wellness exam is a great time to discuss contraception options with your provider. We offer comprehensive contraception management to help you choose the best method for your needs.
