What is a Hysteroscopic Polypectomy?

A hysteroscopic polypectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that removes polyps from inside the uterus. These small growths on the uterus's inner wall are often the cause of uncomfortable and heavy menstrual bleeding, bleeding between your periods, and can affect the ability for a pregnancy to implant.  In rare cases polyps can be cancerous.

A polypectomy is performed with a hysteroscope, a slim and flexible tool that enters through the vagina and into the uterus. The procedure can often be done in the office, but sometimes is done in an operating room with anesthesia.

Removing polyps can lead to more regular and less painful menstrual cycles, improve pregnancy implantation rates, and rule out cancer.

Who Needs a Hysteroscopic Polypectomy?

You might need a hysteroscopic polypectomy if you experience any of the below:

  • Irregular or heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Prior diagnosis of a uterine polyp
  • Infertility issues linked to uterine abnormalities
  • Endometrial hyperplasia
  • Recurrent miscarriages
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Referred by a clinician after a pelvic ultrasound

Benefits of a Hysteroscopic Polypectomy

Choosing a hysteroscopic polypectomy can be beneficial for several reasons:

  • Precision and Safety: This procedure allows for the precise removal of polyps without the need for large incisions.
  • Reduced Symptoms: Many patients experience a significant reduction in symptoms such as heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding and pain after the removal of polyps.
  • Diagnosis and Treatment at the same time: Besides removing polyps, the procedure can help diagnose other conditions, such as endometrial hyperplasia or endometrial cancer.
  • Fertility Improvement: Removing polyps can improve the chances of pregnancy implantation.

What To Expect

During your consultation, your healthcare provider will review your health history and symptoms. An ultrasound might be conducted to ensure the procedure is appropriate for your condition. If found to be a candidate for the procedure, you will receive instructions on how to prepare for it, including any adjustments to your current medications.

The procedure is typically performed in the office without the need for sedation or anesthesia.  This is because we use the smallest available hysteroscope that minimizes pain during the procedure.  Most patients report pain levels below 4 out of 10.  There are also options to use inhaled nitrous oxide during the procedure in our office, or schedule the procedure in an operating room with intravenous sedation. During the procedure a hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus, and a specialized instrument then passes through a channel in the hysteroscopy to grasp and remove any polyps.
Most patients can return to normal activities immediately after the procedure. We'll provide detailed aftercare instructions and support following the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

While a hysteroscopic polypectomy is considered safe and effective, like all surgical procedures, it carries some risks such as infection, bleeding, or damage to the walls of the uterus. These risks are minimal and your provider will explain them in detail during your consultation.

The procedure itself usually takes on average 30 minutes, depending on the number and size of polyps being removed.

A hysteroscopic polypectomy is generally performed in the office or as an outpatient procedure. You will be able to go home the same day. However, if the procedure is done with anesthesia (in an operating room) you will need someone to drive you.

This procedure is specifically designed for the removal of polyps. Fibroids, which are another type of growth, might require different surgical approaches depending on their size and location.

Most patients experience minimal discomfort post-procedure. You might have some light vaginal bleeding or cramping for a few days. It's important to follow the aftercare instructions provided to ensure a smooth recovery.
