In 1952, John S. Inman, Jr. returned from medical school and residency to his hometown of Albany, Georgia and established a private OB-GYN practice.
At this time expectant mothers were declared to be in a “delicate condition” and dads-to-be were excluded from the delivery room. Tests weren’t available to indicate whether the baby was a boy or a girl; in vitro fertilization existed only in the realm of science fiction; and women who developed cancer of the breast, lung or uterus faced what was equal to a death sentence. The private practice grew and Dr. Inman was soon joined by Frank Middleton, OB-GYN and Bill George, OB-GYN.
The group shared a vision of providing comprehensive, compassionate gynecological and obstetrical care and came to be known as OB-GYN Associates and eventually The Veranda, P.C. The physicians constantly sought new knowledge, training and equipment to help enhance the care they provided. Within The Veranda convenient, secure and comfortable office setting, devices and trained technicians could monitor fetal development, check for early evidence of cancer and disease and treat many disorders. The physicians and staff also placed increasing importance on preventive medicine and began offering help with diet, stress and smoking.
From Dr. Inman’s private practice to The Veranda of today, the practice has strived to become and remain South Georgia’s premier healthcare provider for women in all stages of life. Medical advances and breakthroughs in technology occur with breath-taking speed and we’ve always prided ourselves on staying current with the latest in treatments, therapies and medications. We’ve been equally proud of our old-fashioned approach of treating patients the way we’d want ourselves, our family members and our friends to be treated.
