Biography

Beginnings

Dr. Makati is a cardiac electrophysiologist or a cardiologist that specializes in electrical disorders of the heart. After completing residency and fellowship, he elected to further learn about AF ablation under pioneer, Michel_Haïssaguerre, in Bordeaux, France. He was recruited to Clearwater, Florida where he performed the first AF Ablation at Morton Plant Hospital as Dr. Pastore’s colleague in practice.

Professional Journey

Shortly after joining, they recognized the need for a more personalized health care delivery model and formed Tampa Cardiac Specialists servicing St. Joseph’s Hospital Main and St. Joseph’s Hospital North. Dr. Makati served on the founding board for the BayCare Physician Partners network, Rhythm Section Chairperson, Cardiology Steering Committee, and Adult Congenital Heart Disease Committee. In addition to clinical practice, he holds an Associate Professorship at University of South Florida and was a clinical instructor at Washington University and Tufts. Dr. Makati is also active in research, publishing his work on atrial fibrillation, defibrillator therapy, and advanced mapping techniques. He has chaired and presented at national and international meetings and serves on editorial boards of journals. Dr. Makati was the first physician in the world to combine cryotherapy with the Convergent procedure in 2010 and continues to advance the field with his research.
