Personal Interests
In her free time, Dr. Schirmer enjoys spending time with her family, exploring the beautiful areas in and around Rockbridge County, and gardening. She encourages her patients to become involved in decisions regarding their health care and to limit “screen time” for both themselves and their families. Dr. Schirmer is a literacy advocate and has a passion for children’s literature.
Biography
Patricia Schirmer, MD is board certified in both pediatrics and internal medicine. She grew up as one of nine children in a farming community in northern Illinois. While at the University of Arizona in Tucson she developed a passion for hiking and the outdoors. Her mentor in the Southern Arizona Rescue Association encouraged her to pursue a career in medicine. She attended Vanderbilt University School of Medicine where she met her husband, Scott. Residency training was in Rochester, New York. They have three children all of whom went to school at Effinger Elementary. Her passions include reading, children's literature, and breastfeeding advocacy.
