Biography

Dr. William S Gilmer is an experienced, compassionate, comprehensive Neurologist treating patients in Houston’s Museum District near Hermann Park for over 20 years. His goal is to listen carefully, fully understand his patients’ problems, then treat conservatively and effectively. He is board certified in Neurology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. He is fellowship trained in neurodiagnostic procedures including EEG and EMG/NCV.

He was born in New Orleans, and still claims his Cajun heritage, but grew up in Houston. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, then completed his medical training at Baylor College of Medicine, here in Houston.

Dr Gilmer has been involved in organized medicine for over 20 years, representing doctors and patients trying to improve our confusing health care system. He was the 109 th president of the Harris County Medical Society, the largest CMS in the country. He served as President of the Houston Academy of Medicine and was president of both Harris County and Texas Neurological Societies. He was a founding member of the Greater Houston Health Information Exchange (a project of the Great Houston Partnership and Center for Houston’s Future) and was a founding board member of BrainPAC – the advocacy arm of the American Academy of Neurology. He has chaired the TMA Interspecialty Committee, TMA Council on Science and Public Health, TMA Council on Constitution and Bylaws, and the TMA Council on Member services.

He represents Harris County as a delegate to the Texas Medical Association House of Delegates and represents Texas as a Delegate to the American Medical Association House of Delegates.

Dr Gilmer has participated in clinical research studies for Alzheimer’s, Neuromuscular disorders and Migraine.
